So here is how the day went for the Hawg Hunters.... The day did not start well as I overslept! I was supposed to be at Zach's at 5:30. My phone rings at 5:35 and off I go.... Arrive at the ramp and we don't have a great feeling about the day because although we live near the concord and have fished it many times, we have never had great luck. In fact we were not really looking forward to this venue! Leave the launch and head to spot 1. On the way we get left in the dust by another boat. As we make our way down the river in Stella Blue (boat and motor is 23 years old!) we see a full tackle box floating in the river. We spin around and pick it up figuring it was from the boat ahead of us. We catch up to them down river and hand off the tackle box. Good deed for the day...check. We stop at our first spot and begin fishing. Zach hits the first one about 7:30. A nice 2 lber. By 9:00 he has caught 3 fish from 1.8 to 2.4. I still have not contributed a thing. Around 10:00 my topwater bait gets SMASHED by the biggest pike I have ever seen! We get it in the net and it is huge. I got the scale in its mouth but forgot to turn it on! So now we have a massive pike hanging on a useless scale beside the boat! Zach says what do you want to do? Since its tourney day we decide to toss it back and continue with the plan. On a normal day I would have taken a dozen pictures of it!! We did take one of it in the net though. I will post it later. Moving on I catch a nice 2 and a half pounder around noon and another good sized pike. We move to our second spot around 12:30 and we now have a good 9 pounds and 4 fish. Zach catches fish # 5 along the edge of the weeds. Another 2 lber. Bag is full.. about 11 lbs!! At 1:00 my line gets nailed and I set the hook hard. The fish takes off for the weeds and I try to keep him out as I only have flouro on. I get it near the boat and then it dives under and near the motor. I'm thinking oh sh** I'm going to lose it. Zach has the net in the water for about 30 seconds before I can coax her in. When I grabbed the mouth I knew it was a good one!! First cull fish= 4.3 lbs!! We catch one more bass at this spot and cull another one of our small ones. At 1:45 I am bringing my frog back to the boat to finish up when it gets SLAMMED. I set the hook and see the fish turn sideways about 6 feet from the boat. IT'S A BIG ONE... at least as big as the lunker. I could see the entire side and lateral line in the water. It turns hard the other way and throws the hook!!!!!!!!! ARRRGGGHHHH.. 1:50 head back to weigh in. Overall an awesome day for us!! The funny thing is we were in such go mode that we never even took any pictures other than the quick one of the pike. Zach and I have been fishing together on that boat since we were 12 so it nice to pull in that bag when it counts! First place and lunker. We'll take it!
