Fulton Chain Lakes Comments

Comment: The Fulton Chain of lakes lie basically in a NE to SW line along NY highway 28, from Old Forge through Inlet.
They number 1 through 8 and vary from basically a medium sized, shallow pond, (1st lake and 5th lake) to a narrow, sometimes river-like lake (2nd & 3rd) to a large body of open water(4th) and 3 common medium size lakes.
Power boats can travel from 1st, in Old Forge, thru 4th in Inlet wher the system goes thru a narrow canal and into 5th lake whose narrow entrance is sometimes too shallow for many 16ft+ outboards and IOs. Trailered power boats cannot proceed past 5th.
There are short canoe portages from 5th to 6th and 7th to 8th.
There are good power boat ramps available at 1st, 4th, and 7th. some smaller, private ramps may be present.
At 8th lake the interconnected waterway ends with a fairly flat portage to the Browns Track headwater stream that is one of the inlet waterways into Raquette Lake, Forked lake, Long lake and eventually the Raquette River.
